In commemoration of his 100th birthday, Oberlin Opera Theater presents Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring, March 12th-16th in Oberlin's Hall Auditorium.
It is an adaptation of Guy de Maupassant's novella, Le Rosier de Madame Husson. Madame Husson, the model of virtue and propriety in Gisors, (a commune in upper Normandy) is advocating chastity in her town by seeking to crown a rosière, or a "Rose Queen." This girl must be virtuous, chaste, and the picture of model citizenship. Much to her disappointment, no girl can stand up to the investigations that take place, and Madame Husson crowns the village idiot, Isidore, as the 'rosier' (Rose King).
If there is anything that sets Benjamin Britten's adaptation apart from Montpaussant's, it is that Albert Herring is distinctly British, and distinctly a comedy of errors in it's purist form.
Cheerio, Harry Potter, Bloody Hell, Wanker, Downton Abbey, Gordon Ramsay, Bangers and mash, Crumpets, Tea, Kate Middleton, Sherlock, Skins,The Queen, The Beatles, David Tennant... all those things that make Anglophiles (for lack of a better term) go "off one's trolley."
Yes, if you are a British enthusiast, or better yet... a Britten enthusiast. This show is indubitably for you!
