Three Opera Productions Wrap Up Winter Term 2018
››› January 24, 2018 | Posted By Conservatory Communications Correspondents

Opera plays a lead role in this year's winter term at Oberlin Conservatory! From Oberlin Opera Theater's production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Angel's Bone by alumna Du Yun '01 and librettist Royce Vavrek to student productions of both comedic and dramatic works by Gian Carlo Menotti, the roster of programming for opera lovers is almost too good to be true!

New Assistant Director of Opera Theater Christopher Mirto leads a cast and crew of thirty in a five-performance run of "Angel's Bone"--only the second production since its debut in early 2016. The show's wildly creative composer Du Yun melds Renaissance choral, punk rock, cabaret, and opera into a brilliant and savage work that explores the dark effects and motivations behind modern-day slavery and the human trafficking industry. Visit the Oberlin News Center for more information about this Oberlin production.

Opera directing major Tayte Mitchell '18 and the cast of conservatory voice majors present a fully staged production of Gian Carlo Menotti's hour-long dramatic work The Medium January 27 through February 3. This dark opera follows the demise of Madame Flora, who, with the help of her daughter Monica and servant Toby, cheat her clients through faked seances. Tickets for the show are sold out, but there will be a waitlist at the door. For more information, visit the Oberlin Events Calendar.

Though first professionally presented as a double bill alongside The Medium in 1947, The Telephone gets all the attention in this student-led production by conservatory voice majors. Benjamin Croen directs the hour-long comedic opera by Menotti that follows (another) Ben and his girlfriend Lucy, who just keeps talking on the telephone while her boyfriend eagerly waits to propose. See how this story ends February 3 and 4 in Oberlin. No reservation required to see this production. Visit our Oberlin Events Calendar for more information.
