Oberlin Conservatory of Music

Founded in 1865 and situated amid the intellectual vitality of Oberlin College since 1867, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, the nation’s oldest continuously operating conservatory, has been a leader in American institutional music training, and has been called “a national treasure” by the Washington Post. In 1892, Oberlin established the first full-time chair in music history and appreciation. In 1958 it became the first U.S. school to introduce the Suzuki method of string pedagogy.

During the 1960s, Oberlin was a pioneer in the field of electronic music, and, in 1989, Oberlin opened the Otto B. Schoepfle Vocal Arts Laboratory, which furthered revolutionary developments in vocal pedagogy. Primarily an undergraduate institution, Oberlin Conservatory is grounded in the tradition of Western art music and has gained a reputation as one of the great American musical institutions.
