Sophia Bamert
Sophia traveled to Zurich, Switzerland, to learn Swiss German, her father's mother tongue. Staying with her grandparents, Sophia read cover-to-cover through two Swiss German textbooks, took notes, and created her own Swiss German/High German dictionary of vocabulary words from the textbook. By the end of the month, she figured out the grammatical and pronunciation rules of Swiss German. She could converse with native speakers, with whom, early in the month, she could only speak in English.
